So this was the first full week at my new “job” as the sole proprietor of CharKat’s Creative Insanity. I never realized there was so much work involved in being a legitimate business!
So far, I have filed a Fictitious Business Name Statement, advertised said statement in the newspaper, applied for a city business license and home use permit, and scoped out a possible place to have classes. Which brings me to my biggest hurdle…finding classroom space that I can afford!
I have also fleshed out the web site a bit, with class descriptions for what I plan to offer, and did some really neat brochures to hand out.
And that brings us to this week’s Diva Challenge…#219: “Straight Lines all the Tines…er, times.” I figured if all my lines had to be straight, I should do this on a round tile. So I selected one of the cool hand-dyed tiles I purchased from fellow CZT Caren Mlot at TangleU, the uber cool template from Ann E. Grasso, and my favorite mini ruler from Charles Williams, and strung up what I thought was a pretty cool string.
I have to say, I am rather pleased with the result. And before you go poo-poo-ing my use of dots….they are one dimensional lines. Other than the Signo UM-153 silver dots, it was just me and my Micron (and a touch of graphite in the straight line areas.)
And I am still playing catch up, a little…this is the last one from recent Diva Challenges, it was #217, which was Laura’s Birthday challenge…Bunzo vs. Dex. This is on GarzaPapel 300 gsm water color paper, which I had previously stained with hibiscus tea. I worked it with a soft tip Tombow Japanese calligraphy pen, because the surface was a bit bumpy.
And this weeks Square One: Purely Zentangle (on FaceBook) was Purk. “If there’s a Purk in your Fengle, don’t be alarmed now…it’s just a Zinger left from last week.” (I often hear song lyrics in my head while I am tangling…pretty bizarre, but very much a part of my sense of humor and being a rocker chick.)
That’s it for now. Getting ready to hit to road to Texas for a couple days. Have a wedding to go to, if the floods don’t carry us all away first!

I love all of these. I saw the Fengle/Purk/Zinger on Facebook and liked it a lot, so when I saw the others, I wasn’t surprised that they’re lovely too.The DC one is really detailed and I think the use of a gently coloured background makes it rather special.

Hey Char, I have often said that if I knew everything that was involved in owning my own business, I might have headed for Bora Bora instead. This said, I have been in business over 35 years, so I am proof it is possible. Sing out if you want some support. And while we are singing, thanks for the shout out on the 4 N 1 stencil. Hi! Congrats on your new “business “! It’s a lot of work, but NOTHING beats being your own boss! If there’s a Hobby Lobby near you, they have classroom space for anyone to schedule and they don’t charge ANYTHING for it. You provide them with a class discription and they’ll even advertise on their emails. You provide everything (which we do anyway), and students pay you directly. I’m getting my first classes scheduled now. Good luck with everything, and your tiles are Awesome!! Have fun at the wedding and stay dry!

congratulations on starting your own business. at some point in my life I started the law firm of me, myself and I, so I know how work intensive that is. for some reason, when I think about starting a zentangle business it seems even more daunting than starting a law firmeven though it took me 3 years to obtain my law license and only 3 days to become a certified zentangle teacher. I very much like your composition and the idea of using a zendala for your blank tile. I think Rick’s paradox is the perfect tangle to use in a predominant space as it produces a curvilinear effect with only straight lines; hence, the paradox.:)

A beautiful Straight Line Zendala Tile. Love the hand-dyed color. Your string is a work of art in itself. You poured a lot of detail into this tile and it is wonderful. Your Dex vs Bunzo is spectacular. Love your shading and the use of Pearls. Love how you filled Fengle with Purk and topped it off with Zinger. Masterful. I enjoyed your post. The photo of you in your class is awesome. You really know what you are doing. Thanks for sharing your brochure. It is a beautiful piece of work as is all of your artistic endeavors.

great idea putting that diva challenge on a round tile, and the color is just stunning. Paradox everywhere is ALWAYS good! I also love your bunzo flowing all over your Dex. Pretty cool.

Wishing you the best for your business! Some civic centers and libraries allow you to use their “classroom” or auditorium for a min. fee and will even put you in their calendar. I taught at a library in Honolulu, HI last September and it was well attended. Your straight-lined diva piece is gorgeous!

Love all of your work this week! That straight line zendala is beautifully done and the color is to die for. I was so impressed by your zendala that I am attempting to draw my own zendala. It’s about halfway done now. Your Bunzo vs. Dex is amazing. So much contrast and the paper is to die for. I love the texture in that paper and the colors are wonderful. Your Purk tile is very ingenious too, using fengle as a string for Purk. Never would have thought of that in a million years. By the way, love your new blog too…looks great!
